Modern Residential Landscape Design with Thermowood Cladding | USA

Project Overview

This project is located at a newly built private residence in the United States. Rather than focusing solely on the building itself, the homeowner wanted the surrounding landscape to become an essential part of the overall architectural experience — a natural extension of the home that would complete its character rather than compete with it.

Our role in this project extended well beyond supplying exterior materials. We worked closely with the client during the early planning stage, providing landscape layout concepts, material recommendations, and practical design ideas that could be executed by the client's local construction team. Our involvement began at the very first design decisions, not at the delivery dock. This early participation allowed the design to develop as one coherent whole — with materials, layout, and planting considered together from the start, rather than adjusted later.

The only physical product supplied by XIAOZHU was our premium Thermowood exterior wall cladding. The landscape design concept, meanwhile, was developed collaboratively with the homeowner to create a cohesive modern outdoor environment — one where building, garden, and materials speak the same design language.

Client Requirements

The client wanted the house to blend naturally with the surrounding landscape instead of appearing as a standalone building dropped onto the site. The outdoor space needed to reflect a clean, modern architectural style while remaining warm and welcoming. Every detail — from the planting layout to the hardscape and the exterior materials — needed to feel intentional and balanced, contributing to one coherent composition rather than a collection of separate elements.

Because construction would be completed by a local contractor in the United States, the client was looking for professional design guidance rather than a complete construction service. They wanted a practical concept that local builders could easily understand and execute — a clear, buildable direction that translated the design intent into straightforward on-site work.

Our Solution

We began by studying the architectural style of the residence and developed a landscape concept that emphasized simplicity, natural materials, and visual balance. The design was built around the principle that less can communicate more: a restrained composition lets each element earn its place.

Rather than filling the front yard with excessive planting, we proposed a minimalist composition using clean concrete walkways, decorative gravel, carefully positioned natural stones, and structured planting areas. Each element plays a defined role: the walkways establish clear circulation and geometry, the gravel introduces subtle texture, the natural stones add weight and permanence, and the structured planting provides greenery and seasonal interest. This approach allows the architecture to remain the focal point while introducing texture and seasonal change through the landscape.

To strengthen the connection between the building and its surroundings, we recommended using Thermowood exterior wall cladding. The natural wood texture softens the modern architectural lines while adding warmth and character to the façade. Through a specialized heat-treatment process, the material offers excellent dimensional stability — meaning the boards keep their shape through changing temperature and humidity — along with improved durability and enhanced resistance to outdoor weather. These properties make it particularly suitable for long-term exterior applications, where appearance must hold up year after year. For a modern home in an exposed outdoor environment, this combination of appearance and performance made Thermowood the natural choice for the façade.

Throughout the design process, we provided detailed layout suggestions, material coordination, and visual guidance. Based on our design concept, the client successfully collaborated with a local construction team to complete the project according to the proposed plan.

Project Highlights

This project demonstrates that creating an exceptional outdoor environment is not solely dependent on construction — it begins with thoughtful planning and design. The decisions made before any work begins are what shape the final experience.

Instead of simply supplying products, XIAOZHU helped define the overall landscape concept, ensuring that architecture, hardscape, planting, and materials worked together as one unified composition. Every layer of the design was considered in relation to the others.

The Thermowood cladding not only enhances the appearance of the home but also contributes to a warm, natural atmosphere that complements the minimalist landscape design. By combining design expertise with high-quality materials, we enabled the client to achieve a premium result while working with local contractors.

Final Result

The completed project reflects a harmonious relationship between architecture and landscape. The clean geometry, restrained planting palette, natural materials, and carefully considered spatial composition create an entrance that feels calm, elegant, and timeless.

Although construction was completed locally, the overall design direction originated from XIAOZHU's planning and material recommendations. This collaborative approach demonstrates how thoughtful design support can help clients achieve outstanding results, regardless of where the project is built. What began as a planning conversation became a completed landscape that reads as if it had always belonged to the site.

At XIAOZHU, we believe our value goes beyond manufacturing products. By combining landscape design thinking, material expertise, and integrated outdoor solutions, we help clients transform ideas into outdoor spaces that are both functional and inspiring.
